Blog > mystery of the missing drain

After a little investigation I believe I have a combined surface water and foul drain. I poured a bucket of dyed water down a gutter pipe on the side of the house and it appeared in the inspection pit further down the garden where I know water appears when sinks, dishwasher etc are used. Now it is a semi detached house circa 1936. There is a central downpipe at the back of the house for both properties – a boundary pipe if you will. All the other houses in the street built at the same time have the same.

For some reason long before I bought the house the central downpipe was put straight into a water butt with the overflow just spilling onto the ground. This all sat on raised paving that runs the length of the back of the house. I wanted to get rid of the water butt and reconnect the downpipe into the original drain. I removed the water butt, lifted the paving slabs and dug down a bit but can’t for the life of me find a drain to connect to!

I’m not sure what to do but I was hoping as it is a combined system would it be possible to put in a new downpipe close to the main waste pipe that runs down the house and connect into that?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!
