The typical homeowner may not have the time, or, indeed, the inclination, or the skills, to tackle everyday household tasks involving carpentry, plumbing, or electrical work. A professional handyman – either an independent person, or an employee of a handyman service – can provide the tools, and skills, to complete such tasks quickly, efficiently, and affordably. A larger contractor, conversely, may be unwilling to take on a small job, or a number of small jobs involving different skills, and may not be as customer focussed as a result.

There is a multitude of domestic tasks, ranging from, say, the installation of kitchen cabinets, or other basic carpentry tasks, to more critical electrical installations, or repairs – which, if completed inexpertly, can endanger your home, and your life – which require no little skill, and are therefore best left to a professional handyman. A professional handyman should bring not only the skills and experience required to complete the work requested in a timely manner, but also accountability for the quality of the work. He, or she, should be courteous, knowledgeable and communicative, so that even if work does not proceed according to plan, it is still completed to the satisfaction of both parties. This may also include cleaning up, and disposing of any packaging, or leftover materials, when work is completed, or leaving your home in a habitable condition – that is, not without water, or heating, for example – at the end of each working day, if the work takes longer than ! one day.
"Do-It-Yourself" flooring kits are available from any number of manufacturers, and retailers, but unless you can be certain of the structural integrity, and evenness, of your sub-floor, and you have some basic carpentry skills, flooring is another project that may be best left to a professional installer. A professional handyman, or installer, is likely to have experience of installing flooring on various types of sub-floor, and complications such as improper foundations, or the inclusion of a floor heating system, for example, and is much more likely to recognise potential problems early in the project. In comparison, a DIY installation may prove to be false economy, as such problems may go unnoticed until it is too late, and costly remedial work is required.
